Alec Soth is one of my biggest influences photographically. I admire his approach to image making, his photographic style, and his humor. Alec is a “book photographer,” meaning his original vision for his images is to have them appear in book-form upon their completion.
He uses an 8x10 view camera as his primary tool for documentation. His work often deals with an underlying concept that ties all of his images together, or in his words, “connects the dots.” By showcasing his images in a book, he is able to piece together his visual story in a different way than showing in a gallery.
Alec does have gallery shows, but to me, they are a completely different experience then his books. They don't seem to be as intimate.
He also owns a photo/ art book company where he collects and makes books. It’s called Little Brown Mushroom.

Alec Soth is a member of Magnum. He joined as a Nominee in 2004 and became a full member in 2008.
