Photo Essay - Lollypop Farm
Sorry to post these late! These are a few pictures I was able to take at the Humane Center this past weekend. I was very lucky to get beautiful weather. I think it is coming along fairly well although so far no one official at the shelter is willing to let me interview them or even take pictures of them. =/ Just the property and the animals. But I still believe I can work with it. =)

Becky Warren Photo Essay Image

This my sister, Melissa. She is blind but own her own little store inside the State Building downtown. I want to document my sister because I want to show that just because she is blind she is not "normal." She lives on her own, cooks, cleans, runs a business, all by herself. My sister is a strong woman.
In this photo I visited her at work and took this of her. She was putting money in the register. She uses her hand to know what bill goes where. The little red nubs on the cash register is to help her know what buttons she needs.
Photo Essay

This is Sam here, and I am going to post a picture or two that I have taken for my Photo Essay. Before doing so I need to say that my original plans fell through, because my subject (my friend and his band 'to-be') had a death in the family. So, with that said, I have resorted to my other idea.
I am going to document what life is like for one of my best friends, named John. I have known him for almost 10 years now. He identifies as a Transgendered Woman. To put it simply, he feels like a woman trapped in the body of a man. His chosen name is Alice, and he prefers to be referred to as what he feels he is, a woman, so I will do that from now on.
Alice is still in the transition process- she wears women's clothing, makeup, and will be taking hormones soon to aid in this process. I guess what I want to show is this process of transition (even though it won't be finished by a long shot) and have her explain how she knew this is the right path for her and have her talk about some of the struggles in her life. Even though she is different- she is still a person.
Some photo ideas I have for this are:
1) Shooting at least one photo of Alice as a man (done)
2)Shoot some of the things in her personal space (ex. her room)
3)Maybe video of her getting ready for her day (ex. putting makeup on)
4)at least one photo of the hormones she will be taking
Joe L-C - Image from my Photo Essay
Before posting my image, I'd like to remind the class of what my photo essay is about. I'm documenting a resident in a home for disabled adults. He has a job, enjoys bowling and bocce ball, goes out for dinner, hangs out with his friends, and he loves to perform and sing on stage. Just like us, he has his emotional ups and downs, his frustrations, and his goals. My hope is to be able to document this and show people who may not be aware, that disabled individuals aren't anything to be afraid of or to make fun of. I want people to see that they are, like you and I, individualistic, unique, beautiful people, that can bring amazing amounts of joy into your life.
I know this is a pretty specific goal, but that's what I aim to do. On top of that, I hope to make this more of an "art piece." Like the documentary work of Alec Soth and other photographers I admire, I hope to use my photographic skills to create a piece of art that will make people feel something special. I guess you can say that it's non-tradiional photojournalism. I found an example of a body of work by the photographer Timothy Archibald that accomplishes what I'm talking about. I would love to create something personal and beautiful like this: http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/05/son-and-father-pierce-autisms-veil/
I'm honestly not sure if I'll be able to accomplish my goal of doing so. Judging by my first image, I think I'm far from what I want. In this image, I was limited by the type of lighting, which kind of ruined a lot for me and flattened the image. I shot this with a 4x5 camera and it looks like it could have been shot with 35mm, which is bothering me. I think I can still use this camera and achieve more of what I'm looking for, as long as really pay extra attention to my lighting sources.
Here's what I've got. I'm not sure if it will make it into my final edit of the essay.

Industrial steamroller to be used for April 9 printmaking event on SU Quad
Monday, April 9, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
By Erica Blust • (315) 443-5891
The printmaking program in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) will present its fifth annual “Steamroller Printing” event on Monday, April 9, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in a tent on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quad in front of the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
Throughout the day, students and faculty in the printmaking program will print impressions of large-scale woodblock prints using an industrial steamroller. They will sling ink and make finely rolled editions of relief prints.
The printmaking program is located in VPA’s Department of Art and includes courses in relief, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, letterpress printing, hand papermaking and book arts. The program offers both bachelor and master of fine arts degrees; the graduate program was recently ranked No. 19 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report as part of its 2013 specialty rankings for Best Graduate Schools in Fine Arts.

Gardenscape '12

As some of you may know, I am originally from Rochester, NY. This past weekend I went home and attended Rochester's garden show, which is called Gardenscape. You may have heard of Syracuse's garden show, CNY blooms, which was held here on campus this year, but in my opinion Gardenscape takes the cake in NY garden shows. They have many great large displays of actual gardens, installed by real landscapers looking for a chance to show off their work, as well as vendors selling flowers, food, gardening supplies and different things to improve your home and lawn. I love going there every year and taking literally hundreds of photos. Here are just a few I took, hope you enjoy them!

Nice work on the sports assignment. I know it challenged many of you…that’s a good thing. The skills you use photographing a sporting event transcend to all aspects of photography.
I posted two galleries. Rebecca’s photos from a Syracuse Crunch game and Tim’s photos from the Jamesville-Dewitt vs. Cortland boy’s section III final basketball game. (Links are below).
A few of you didn’t include caption information in the file info area with your photos, so I couldn’t post them. If you still would like to post them..no problem…please see me.

Full Moon over Pennellville
This is a picture that I captured off of my front porch in Pennellville. It is the full moon (shot purposely out of focus). I took this picture roughly 2 weeks ago and thought that I would share it with the class. I just love the essence of it and the framing done by the naked tree branches.

Craig F. Walker, The Denver Post's Pulitzer Prize-winner, named Photographer of Year
February 13, 2012 1:21 AM
By Tom McGhee
The Denver Post denverpost.com
Pulitzer Prize-winning Denver Post photographer Craig Walker has been named Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International competition, one of the most highly respected photojournalism contests in the world.
Walker, 45, received the award for a portfolio of photographs that included pictures from a project about Iraq War veteran, Brian Scott Ostrom, who suffers post traumatic stress disorder, and others taken at Occupy Denver protests. "It is really special because it looks at an entire year's work; it leaves me speechless," Walker, 45, said Sunday of the award.
The York, Pa., native, who has been with The Post since 1998, won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for a collection of photos he took over 27 months that documented the transition of Ian Fisher from high school graduate to a soldier engaged in the Iraq war.
A news release about the Pictures of the Year award called Walker's project on PTSD sufferer Ostrom "stunning."
"In honoring Walker's portfolio, the judges noted a strong balance of powerful aesthetic with solid journalistic content that reflects news events and social issues," according to the release. POYi is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the journalism school.
"I think it is important to document our history and I feel really fortunate that I can do that in a visual manner," Walker said.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Photography, he began his career in Massachusetts, at the Marlborough Enterprise.
He credited his success to people who have opened their lives to his lens. "It is people like Ian and Scott who are willing to open up their life and share that personal a story. Those stories don't happen unless you meet those people. "

Something Fun

Here are the covers of the past 2 papers from where I work. I am really proud of the past two papers that we have produced because we have been revamping our paper and trying to make a name for it. We recently combined the Wayne County Star and The Post Herald to bring back The Lakeshore News. When I first started working here we were really struggling, our readers didn't like the change, but since then I, along with my co-workers have been working our butts off to produce that "down-home" news that people love to read about. With that said, our biggest challenge each week is the front cover.
Every week we are always debating on which stories and photos should make the front cover. This is one of the most important parts of the paper because the front cover is what people see first, what's on the front cover could be a huge deciding factor on whether someone wants to purchase our paper or not. Coming from a small community, and not the only paper in town, we have to have to do a bang up job with our cover to compete with the other papers.Hope I didn't bore anyone to death, just wanted to share and give people something to think about... When you pick up a paper, what kind of photos capture your eye and make you stop and truly look at it.
Hope everyone's having a great week!

ALEC SOTH - Joe L-C
Alec Soth is one of my biggest influences photographically. I admire his approach to image making, his photographic style, and his humor. Alec is a “book photographer,” meaning his original vision for his images is to have them appear in book-form upon their completion.
He uses an 8x10 view camera as his primary tool for documentation. His work often deals with an underlying concept that ties all of his images together, or in his words, “connects the dots.” By showcasing his images in a book, he is able to piece together his visual story in a different way than showing in a gallery.
Alec does have gallery shows, but to me, they are a completely different experience then his books. They don't seem to be as intimate.
He also owns a photo/ art book company where he collects and makes books. It’s called Little Brown Mushroom.

Alec Soth is a member of Magnum. He joined as a Nominee in 2004 and became a full member in 2008.
Here's a video of him talking about his approach to image making:

Power of the press
Check out this story about a photo I shot Monday afternoon that ran on the front page of Tuesday's Post-Standard. It shows the power of the press. The story below explains what happened.

Syracuse, NY – A picture of an Occupy Syracuse protester on the front page of Tuesday’s Post-Standard helped identify the man as a suspect in a forged check case, Syracuse police said.
Aaron Dean, 19, who gave his address as the Rescue Mission, 120 Gifford St., was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny, police said. He is to be arraigned this morning in Syracuse City Court.
Police were told Thursday that a law office at 100 S. Salina St. had been burglarized and a check belonging to one of the lawyers taken.
The check was cashed that morning at M&T Bank’s downtown Syracuse office, police said. A detective obtained clear surveillance photos of the suspect and showed them to employees of the law firm but they did not recognize the man.
Tuesday, one of the employees told police that a photo of the same man had been published that morning with an article about Occupy Syracuse.
Police said they went to Perseverance Park, the base for Occupy Syracuse’s protests, found Dean and arrested him.
